Summary

On a Microsoft Windows Server 2012 with Microsoft Failover Clustering / Microsoft Cluster Services enabled, an excess number of network timeouts may be caused by an enabled NETBIOS look up on the Microsoft Failover Cluster Virtual Adapter

Information

On a Microsoft Windows server with Microsoft Failover Clustering / Microsoft Cluster Services enabled, a new network adapter named " Microsoft Failover Cluster Virtual Adapter " is automatically created. The functionality of this adapter is described in this Technet Blog Post .

This automatically created network adapter uses APIPA to allocate an IP addresses, due to this no DNS Server is configured on this network adapter.

When resolving a name on this adapter the DNS look up fails and a NETBIOS fallback may be triggered. If this NETBIOS fallback also failes a delay may be introduced in dependent communications, possibly leading to timeouts. These timeouts may affect Fabasoft server communication.

Solution

If you see NETBIOS lookup errors on the Microsoft Failover Cluster Virtual Adapter , this behavior may be influenced using the DNS_QUERY_FALLBACK NETBIOS (0x00020000) flag. For details please contact you Microsoft Support representative
